TEHERAN – A few days after the resumption of indirect talks with the United States on the nuclear issue, Iran has announced the activation of modernized centrifuges to enrich uranium more quickly, the use of which is prohibited by the 2015 agreement. President, Hassan Rouhani, officially inaugurated a line of 164 so-called IR-6 centrifuges and another of 30 IR-5s, installed in the Natanz complex, in the center of the country, during a videoconference ceremony broadcast by state television.

It is not yet clear what effects the move will have on the Vienna talks, which will continue next week. At that time, through the mediation of European countries, the Americans said they were “ready” to withdraw some of the sanctions imposed on Iran. But they also said that this will only happen when Tehran “returns to comply with the obligations of the nuclear agreement”.

“The United States reserves the right to impose sanctions for non-nuclear reasons, whether it be terrorism or violations of human rights or interference in our elections,” a State Department official told US media.
