Nuclear, stalemate in Vienna’s talks with Iran. Israel, Gantz on a mission to the US

The Europeans express “disappointment and concern” at Tehran’s attitude, the US again evokes the possibility of military intervention, but the Iran of the new ultra-conservative president Ebrahim Raisi does not give up: the Islamic Republic “will not back down” on Tehran’s chief negotiator, Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani, said in an exclusive interview with Ansa – conducted by Mojgan Ahmadvand – to reactivate the 2015 nuclear deal, adding that since it was the Americans who left since that agreement in 2018, it is up to them to take the first step.

The Iranian proposals are “logical and well founded,” Bagheri says on the plane that takes him back to Tehran for consultations after five days of a new round of negotiations held in Vienna between Iran, Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China, and indirectly the United States.

Seventh round of uphill negotiations

It is the seventh round since the start of the negotiations, but the first after a hiatus of more than five months following the election of Raisi, who has replaced moderate Hassan Rohani.

The difference and the distance between the parties, from what the western parties affirm, appeared in all its significance when Bagheri presented a new proposal for an agreement which, according to the Europeans, calls into question “almost all the compromises that had been hardly found “in the previous six rounds. For their part, the Iranians have made it known that the illustrated document is divided into two parts, one on the withdrawal of sanctions, the other on the return of Iranian nuclear activities within the limits set by the agreement six years ago, which have been gradually overtaken. But from what Bagheri explains, the first aspect is the one that should clearly take precedence.

For Bagheri “it is up to the US to make the first move”, after the withdrawal from the negotiations by the Trump administration and the initial openings of the new tenant of the White House Joe Biden who then cooled down. As for the Europeans, “they too have failed to fulfill their obligations to remedy the American move,” argues the Iranian chief negotiator. That is to say, they did not oppose the logic of American sanctions, which inflicted heavy damage on the Iranian economy. Bagheri also rejects Western criticism of the sustainability of the proposals he illustrated in Vienna: “The counterparts can present their drafts, but we expect them to give a logical answer to the Iranian one”.
