Olympique de Marseille thrashes Villarreal and approaches the quarterfinals of the Europa League

Olympique de Marseille moved closer to qualifying by beating Villarreal 4-0 this Thursday (7), in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Europa League.

The duel marked the return of coach Marcelino García Toral, now at Villarreal, to the Vélodrome stadium, after a brief spell at Olympique at the beginning of the season.

“We didn’t measure up and it’s my fault. I didn’t make the right decisions and I am solely responsible”, declared Marcelino. “This is a very hard blow. We didn’t expect to play a game like this and end with this result. Qualifying is very difficult right now,” he admitted.

Everything went well for the French team in the match. Jordan Veretout opened the scoring in the 23rd minute by heading in a Jonathan Clauss cross. At 28, Colombian Yerson Mosquera scored an own goal when trying to deflect a shot.

Before the break, Olympique scored the third with Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (42′ penalty), who completed the rout in the second half with a beautiful cross shot (59′).

Shortly after the fourth goal, full-back Alberto Moreno was sent off and left Villarreal with ten on the field (62′), without the strength to seek a reaction.

Current Olympique de Marseille coach Jean Louis Gasset achieved his fourth victory in four games since taking over the team in place of Italian Gennaro Gattuso.

The return game of the clash will be in a week, in Spain.
