Opening IIMS 2024, President Jokowi: Electric Cars are the Future of Indonesian Automotive

President Joko Widodo believes that electric vehicles are the future of the Indonesian automotive world. He conveyed this in his statement after officially opening the 2024 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) automotive exhibition at the Jakarta International Expo (JIEXPO) Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Thursday, February 15 2024.

“Yes, I see well and there are many electric cars on display. I think that the future of Indonesian automotive is in electric cars because we have nickel and other raw materials,” said the President to the media crew.

For this reason, the Head of State said that the government had provided a number of incentives to encourage increased production of electric vehicles in the country. These incentives include, among other things, a reduction in value added tax (VAT).

“We have also pushed for a reduction in VAT, I think this will encourage sales and in turn will encourage production at electric vehicle factories in Indonesia,” he said.

By providing these incentives, the President hopes that the Indonesian electric automotive industry can compete with other countries. Moreover, the President continued, Indonesia has the potential and strength to develop electric vehicle batteries.

“I think the direction is in that direction so that we can compete with other countries. If we have all the local content, we have the batteries, I think we’ll see then we will be able to compete with other countries,” he continued.

Furthermore, the President said that these incentives were provided to all electric vehicle manufacturers, including those producing electric public transportation.

“We encourage everything, the aim is for everything to be produced in Indonesia. EVs of all brands are produced in Indonesia because we have the power of EV batteries,” he said. (BPMI Setpres)
