Although for 15 years the authorities of the Islamic Republic have portrayed the Taliban as the longa manus of Pakistan, the truth is more complex. Relations between Pakistan and the Taliban are not always idyllic and interests are not always convergent. The Taliban seem to want to increase their autonomy and the Pakistanis try to prevent this by manipulating the dynamics within the group.
