Paris, the Eiffel Tower closed due to strike for the 4th consecutive day. Unions call for restoration: “Advanced degradation”

Another strike at Tour Eiffel Paris. The most visited monument in the world remained closed for fourth day consecutive due to the protest of the unions CGT e FO who denounce poor financial management of the site by the French municipality and invoke restoration works.

The protest that has been ongoing for several weeks had as its first effect a strike in December 2023, on the day of the hundredth anniversary of the death of its builder, the engineer Gustave Eiffel. According to the unions, the health crisis due to Covid and the closure of the tower for works have caused losses for 130 million euros, making the current model economical “unliveable”.

A few months before the Paris 2024 Olympics, the unions also criticize the postponement of some construction sites due to Covid and the advanced state of degradation of the monument, despite the ongoing renovation work. The building, repainted 14 years ago, instead of the usual 7 years, it has several points of corrosion visible to the naked eye. ” It’s clearly in one state of decay. As you approach the bottom of the tower you can see traces of rust. There are employees with over 30 years of seniority who have never seen something like this” underline the unions.
