Now it’s official: Poland will start building a wall to protect its border, and the European one, with Belarus from migratory flows. This was announced by Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski, who explained in a statement that “the construction of the border wall will begin this year. The works will be carried out simultaneously by various companies on four sections, 24 hours a day in three shifts”.
These are the main recommendations decided at today’s meeting of the inter-ministerial team for the construction of the wall. Just today, Monday, the President of the European Parliament Charles Michel discussed the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border with Ukrainian President Zelensky, explaining that “the EU-Ukraine partnership does not falter in the face of shared global and regional challenges” said Michel.
Meanwhile, the Belarusian president, Alexander Lukashenko, had a one-hour telephone conversation with the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, while a migration crisis is underway on the border between Poland and Belarus that the EU accuses Minsk of having created. This was announced by the Belarusian news agency Belta. It is Lukashenko’s first telephone conversation with a European leader after the crackdown on street protests against his disputed re-election.
