A serious oil spill off the southern coast of California causes fish deaths and contaminates bird habitats
According to a report from Reuters on October 4, local time, a large-scale oil spill on the southern coast of California caused the death of a large number of fish and polluted wetlands where birds lived. Local officials called it an environmental disaster.
On October 3, local time, the US Coast Guard led federal, state, and municipal agencies to clean up the contaminated waters and announced a full investigation of the oil spill.
The location of the spill was in Huntington Beach, southern California. Mayor Kim Carr said at a press conference on Sunday that since the first report on the morning of October 2nd, 126,000 gallons (approximately 477,000 liters) of crude oil are expected. It has spread into the ocean, covering about 13 square miles (33.67 square kilometers) of the Pacific Ocean.
