Pope: Eliminate the injustice of world hunger-Vatican News

by admin

The pre-summit meeting of the United Nations Food System Summit is currently being held in Rome. In a letter to the UN Secretary-General Guterres, the Pope mentioned that everyone has the responsibility to “eliminate the injustice of hunger in the world” through courageous policies. This letter was read by Archbishop Gallagher, Secretary-General of the Department of State of the Holy See and the Relations Departments of Nations.

(Vatican News Network)Challenges, scandals, crimes and injustices: Pope Francis uses these words to describe hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was also pointed out in the letter sent by the Pope to the UN Secretary-General Guterres during the pre-summit meeting of the United Nations Food System Summit in Rome from July 26 to 28. This meeting is to prepare for the summit to be held in New York in September this year.

The Pope wrote in the letter that this was an “important meeting” because “the new crown epidemic has exposed us to systemic injustices, and the unity of our human family has been compromised.” These systemic injustices include poverty and the destruction of the earth and “our common home”; people “irresponsibly use and abuse the resources that God has placed on the earth.”

Against this background, the Pope strongly called for “fundamental changes.” In fact, it is not enough to rely on technology to increase food production, because the result may be “exhaustion of nature”, not only “expanding the outer desert, but also expanding the inner spiritual desert.” If “many people still do not have daily food”, then producing “enough food” is not enough. Not only that, the Pope also reiterated that this would constitute “a real scandal, a crime that violates basic human rights” and “injustice.” Everyone “is responsible for eliminating these injustices through practical actions, good measures, and brave local and international policies.”

What can I do? The Pope pointed out some specific suggestions: First, the food system must be changed in a “prudent and correct” way, so that “from the perspective of the environment and respect for local culture, the food system is sustainable.” In fact, their purpose is “to increase resilience, strengthen the local economy, improve nutrition, reduce food waste, and provide everyone with a healthy diet.” The Pope emphasized that the change must start from the inside, because the goal of “zero hunger” cannot be achieved by food production alone. It also requires “a new way of thinking, a holistic approach, and the planning of food systems to protect the planet and with human dignity as the core”.

Another suggestion put forward by the Pope is that it is necessary to “ensure sufficient food on a global scale and promote decent work locally” and to nourish the world today without harming the future. The other points pointed out by the Pope include restoring the centrality of the rural sector and the urgent need for “agricultural sector to regain priority in the political and economic decision-making process”, especially in the later stages of the new crown epidemic.

In addition, the Pope pointed out that “family is an important part of the food system” and at the same time called for effective policies to meet the needs of rural women, youth and farmers in the “poorest and remote” areas. If you want to maintain “productive multilateralism” and a responsible food system, “justice, peace, and the unity of the human family” are extremely important.

At the end of the letter, the Pope stated that everyone has the responsibility to achieve a world without food, water, medicine and work, and to make these benefit the poorest first. The Holy See and the Catholic Church serve this “noble goal” and provide its contribution. The Pope called for “no one to be left behind” and wished that “everyone can meet their own basic needs” so as to “build a peaceful, prosperous and truly brotherly society.”
