More than 300 million women and girls menstruate every day, but many find it difficult to access menstrual hygiene products and adequate sanitation. It is to deal with this “menstrual poverty” that the Portuguese government has decided to launch a pilot project in which free sanitary pads will be distributed for low-income people.
