According to a report on the website of Singapore’s “Lianhe Zaobao” on December 31, US President Biden and Russian President Putin warned each other that the escalation of tensions in Ukraine might undermine relations between the two countries. However, the two sides appeared to be preparing for further diplomatic contacts, and Moscow said Putin was “satisfied” with the talks.

The report quoted Reuters. US officials said that Biden and Putin had a phone call at 3:35 pm Eastern Time on Thursday (30th). The conference call lasted about 50 minutes. This is also the second call between Biden and Putin this month.

White House Press Secretary Psaki issued a statement saying that Biden made it clear to Putin that if Russia further “invades” Ukraine, the United States and its allies and partners will respond decisively.

Biden told Putin that the United States will make a strong response to any Russian “invasion” of Ukraine, and Russia must “degrade” the situation in order to resolve the deadlock through diplomatic channels.

The Kremlin said that Putin told Biden that if Western countries impose new sanctions on Russia, they may “completely tear” Russia-US relations, and pointed out that this would be a big mistake.

However, Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Ushakov, said that the Kremlin was “satisfied” with the call as a whole, adding that Putin emphasized to Biden that Russia needs to see a positive effect in the security talks in January 2022. The results cannot be negotiated indefinitely.

Ushakov said at a video press conference that day: “We need to see a result. The result we want to promote is to ensure that Russia’s security is guaranteed.”
