Putin: ready to offer Europe all the gas it asks of us

With one hand it offers more gas to Europe, with the other it indicates the path that Russia intends to take to present itself with the cards in order to the Climate Conference in Glasgow, committing it for the first time to achieve energy neutrality by 2060.

At the Energy Conference taking place in Moscow, Vladimir Putin experiences the difficult balance to which his country is called: Russia, which entrusts 35% of the federal budget revenue to oil and gas, is in fourth place in the ranking of the great responsible for the emissions discharged into the earth’s atmosphere. At the same time, it is also one of the main victims of the phenomena generated by climate change, as evidenced by its burning forests and the risks that the collapse of the permafrost entails for the cities and energy infrastructures of Siberia. For a country like this, the energy transition takes on a more complex dimension than elsewhere.

This is demonstrated by the still crucial role of energy producer and exporter: determined to reduce its dependence on Moscow, Europe is now asking Moscow for more gas to reduce prices. And Putin seems willing to please her. «If they ask us to increase (the supplies, ed) – said the Russian president speaking at the Conference on Wednesday – we are ready to increase them. We have nothing against it, absolutely nothing ».

Putin rejected as “total nonsense” the idea that the Kremlin used the situation as a political weapon, slowing down supplies to demonstrate to Europeans the importance of Nord Stream 2, the controversial pipeline to Germany now completed, but awaiting the regulatory go-ahead.
