In the long decades of the Cold War between the generals of the Pentagon and those of the Red Army one of the most common words used was ‘Mad’, an acronym for Mutual assured destruction, military doctrine behind the so-called deterrence. A simple concept (the large-scale use of nuclear weapons would cause the complete annihilation of both the attacker and the defender) that avoided the Third World War even in the most critical moments of the clash between the two superpowers of the time, the United States and the Union Soviet.
