The UK government said the “high potential individual” visa route, which opened on Monday (May 30), will attract the best talent.

This visa scheme will be suitable for people who have graduated from a top university outside the UK within the past five years. They can apply regardless of where they were born and do not need a job offer first.

Under the scheme announced on Monday, graduates of a bachelor’s or master’s degree with a top 50 foreign university can apply for a two-year work visa, allowing family members; those with a doctorate can apply for a three-year visa.

Later, they will also be able to switch to a long-term employment visa if they meet certain requirements.

Eligible universities must be in the top 50 in at least two of the following rankings: Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Academic Ranking of World Universities and QS World University Rankings.

The UK government says candidates must pass security and crime checks, and speak, read, listen and write English at an intermediate level. This level is defined as “being able to communicate effortlessly with native speakers”.

The visa costs £715, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge, which allows immigrants to the UK to use the country’s public health service, the ‘National Health Service’ (NHS).

Eligible people can also bring their family, but they must have at least £1,270 in maintenance funds.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said the route meant the UK would grow into a leading “international centre for innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship”.

“We want the businesses of tomorrow to be built here today – that’s why I’m calling on students to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to develop their careers here,” Sunak said.
