Republican lawmakers question the review process for bringing Afghans to the US-Wall Street Journal

by admin

U.S. Republican lawmakers questioned the review process for bringing Afghans to the United States. They said that after the fall of Kabul two months ago, in the chaotic evacuation operation, standard review procedures were ignored.

Republican aides to the US Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs drafted an internal memo that stated that certain standard procedures for refugees, such as interviews and document verification, were skipped or postponed. These assistants visited military bases handling Afghan refugees in the United States and abroad. The Wall Street Journal reviewed the memo, which was prepared before Biden administration officials gave a closed-door briefing to committee members. The briefing included the committee’s Republican leaders and Ohio Republican senators. Rob Portman.

The memo says that those without written documents or identifying biometrics or personal information are allowed to provide their names and dates of birth when entering the US government tracking system, which is another source of concern. The memo also stated that the review also does not include an assessment of the applicant’s relationship with the United States.
