A senior U.S. government official told Reuters on Thursday that Friday’s meeting was “historic” and an opportunity for the four leaders to talk openly about “modern challenges, their hopes and ambitions.”

Australian Prime Minister: I hope never to be coerced

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison emphasized the importance of a “free and open” Indo-Pacific region.

Morrison further stated that the Indo-Pacific region should not be coerced, in order to show that he is concerned about Beijing’s increasingly arbitrary and growing influence in the region.

“We are working together on low-emission technologies… We are working hard to make cyberspace and emerging and key technologies trusted in an open society, and to ensure their safety, to solve problems, and to respond to supply chain challenges. These challenges affect us in many ways. The security, prosperity and environment of the century are critical.”

Biden told his Quad partners that a vaccine plan they reached at the virtual summit in March is expected to “produce another 1 billion doses in India to increase the total supply.”

Modi responded at the Quartet meeting that this measure will be of great help to countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

Quad plans to provide 1 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine in Asia by the end of 2022.

Modi: Quad will be a force to promote global interests

Modi also said that, in a sense, Quad will play a “power to promote global interests.” He believes that cooperation under the Quad framework will “ensure the prosperity and peace of the Indo-Pacific region and the world.”

Biden said that the United States, Japan, Australia, and India represent the four major democracies. They “know how to accomplish the task, and we can meet the challenge.”

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga stated that this meeting demonstrated the strong unity between the four countries and their firm commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

“Hopefully, at this summit, we can summarize the concrete progress made so far, explore ways to further expand Quad cooperation in new fields such as infrastructure and clean energy among the four countries, and promote exchanges between people in science and technology.”

Reuters reported that a senior US official said that Quad expects to announce several new agreements, one of which aims to strengthen the security of the semiconductor supply chain, combat illegal fishing and raise awareness of the sea.
