RIO DE JANEIRO – The death toll from an anti-drug operation conducted by the Rio de Janeiro civil police in the Jacarezinho favela, in the north of the capital, is 25 victims, including an agent. In the operation, reports the local press, two people were also injured, passengers of the subway who were in the wagons passing by the Triagem stop when they were reached by stray bullets.

Videos recorded by residents and taken by the cameras of local broadcasters showed images of confusion in the alleys of the favela accompanied by the sound of explosions of grenades and bursts of automatic rifles. Residents told the broadcaster OGlobo not being able to leave the house. These include a bride who had to postpone the wedding and a pregnant woman who had to postpone the birth with a caesarean section scheduled for this morning.

Operation Exceptis by the civil police investigates the use of children and adolescents by criminals to conduct illegal operations including murder, drug dealing, theft and hijacking of railroad trains passing near the favela. Police say the region’s trafficking uses heavy weapons guerilla tactics against uniformed officers passing through the region. Brazilian security forces are often accused of excessive use of force against the civilian population during operations conducted in the country’s major cities.
