Roberto Carlos show is canceled due to lack of security at Pacaembu

After an inspection, the city of São Paulo decided this Friday (19) to cancel a concert by singer Roberto Carlos that was scheduled for tonight at the Pacaembu Arena, which is still under construction. The show would mark Roberto Carlos’ birthday, who turns 83 today. This would also be the first event that would take place at Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu, since it was granted to the private sector.

The singer’s performance was scheduled to take place in the second basement of the arena.

According to the city hall, the decision was taken after teams from the firefighters and the Department of Property Control and Use (Contru), a body associated with the Housing Secretariat, found irregularities in the area, such as lack of emergency exits, lack of signage for access routes, escape, emergency exit doors without panic bars, uneven and unfinished flooring due to construction work and an inoperative fire detection system.

In the report, the Fire Department also stated that “not even a Technical Project for Temporary Occupation in Permanent Buildings (PTOTEP) was presented, containing the appropriate fire safety measures”.

“We must always have safety as a priority. Given the reports issued by firefighters and Contru himself, it would be irresponsible to hold today’s show. Unfortunately, the event had to be canceled due to the risk identified in inspections. We hope that the show can be held soon, after the concessionaire corrects the irregularities”, said Mayor Ricardo Nunes.

The old Pacaembu stadium was granted to Allegra Pacaembu, which took over management of the complex for a period of 35 years. Since June 2021, the site has been under construction.

The initial forecast was that, in January of this year, the new arena would be able to host the final of the São Paulo Junior Football Cup. The São Paulo Football Federation (FPF), which organizes the tournament, confirmed that the game would be played at the Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu, but as the works have not yet finished and, citing a “lack of security”, the federation decided to transfer the final of the championship to Neo Química Arena, from Corinthians.

Early this afternoon, the Pacaembu Arena concessionaire even released a note informing that Roberto Carlos’ show would be continued, stating that “all regulations in force in the city are being complied with” and that there was “no reason for the event to not be carried out.” But then the company backed down.

“The Concessionária Allegra Pacaembu and Four Even, in order to comply with the determinations of the city of São Paulo, inform that the show that would be held today, April 19, 2024, with the singer Roberto Carlos, will not be held” , the company wrote late this afternoon.

According to the company, people who purchased tickets online for the show should contact the customer service channel via WhatsApp 0800-232-0800. Those who purchased physical tickets will have to wait for a statement from the company on how the amounts will be refunded.
