MOSCOW – A student opened fire on fellow students and professors inside the Perm University – 1300 kilometers east of Moscow – killing five people and wounding six others. The young man was killed by the police; at first the news of his arrest spread.
When the shooting began, many students tried to escape by jumping from the window of the classroom located on the first floor. The Russian Investigation Commission – the agency that deals with the most serious crimes – said the killer has been identified as a student.
Russia has quite restrictive rules on the possession and use of firearms, but some types of pistols and rifles are available for hunting and self-defense, subject to the production of documents proving sanity.
