US basketball star Brittney Griner, in prison in Russia, pleaded guilty to drug smuggling during her trial in Moscow. The Russian agency writes it Tasswhich reports the player’s interpreter’s statement to court: “Ms. Griner pleads guilty, claims it was not her intention to carry baggage with drugs or to commit a crime.”
Griner would have said he acted involuntarily because he was packing in a hurry. The player was arrested in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport after containers of cannabis oil vaporizers were found in her luggage. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. The trial of the Phoenix Mercury star in WNBA, a two-time Olympic gold medalist with the US national team, began last week. The next hearing is set for July 14th.
Two days ago Griner wrote to the President of the United States, Joe Biden, explaining that he was afraid of never seeing the people he loved again and asking him to bring her home soon.
