South Africa, violence for the detention of Zuma: protests and looting

by admin

Shops devastated and robbed overnight in Johannesburg and the M2, one of the main arteries of the economic hub city of South Africa, was partly closed. Violence continues in the country after the arrest of former president Zuma. The riots were concentrated mainly in KwaZulu-Natal. Zuma is serving right here, in his fiefdom, 15 months in prison for contempt of the court. His legal case represents a test for the country on the ability to apply the law even against prominent and powerful personalities: a litmus test of the rule of law in South Africa 27 years after the victory of the Africa National Congress against the white minority.

Zuma’s incarceration infuriated the former president’s supporters, but it also exposed the deep divisions in the ANC, the party that belonged to Nelson Mandela. Crime is benefiting from the unstable situation and many merchants complain about shop attacks and thefts. The intelligence services have already warned that anyone inciting riots will be prosecuted. Last night’s looting concentrated mainly in the Alexandra and Jeppestown area. There were rumors of shots fired against some vehicles on the M2 which was then partly closed to traffic. Protests were still going on in Hillbrow this morning. There have also been looting in Durban.
