[环球时报-环球网报道 记者 张卉]On June 30, 2021, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin presided over a regular press conference. Part of the content is as follows.

Q: According to reports, the ROK Congress passed a resolution on the 29th, strongly condemning the Japanese government’s decision to discharge nuclear contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant to the sea, and urged Japan to immediately withdraw the relevant decision. What is China’s comment?

A: We support the just position of the South Korean side. More than two months since Japan unilaterally made the decision to discharge Fukushima nuclear contaminated water, Pacific Rim countries including China and South Korea, as well as the Pacific Islands Forum and other organizations have expressed serious concerns about Japan’s decision.

More than two months could have been used to fully negotiate with stakeholders, could be used to adjust the nuclear-contaminated water disposal plan, and could be used to rectify the chaotic management situation of TEPCO. However, the Japanese side insisted on going its own way and continued to advance preparations for the discharge of nuclear contaminated water. So far, it has not made a serious and responsible response to the concerns of the international community.

We once again warn the Japanese side that the disposal of nuclear contaminated water is related to the lives and health of the Japanese people and the people of the world, and it is related to the safety of the global marine ecological environment. It must be handled with the utmost care. The Japanese side should revoke the wrong decision as soon as possible and return to the right track of full consultation with all stakeholders in the international community and the International Atomic Energy Agency as soon as possible.
