The Joint Staff Headquarters said that considering the flying distance of the aircraft is less than 200 kilometers and the flying altitude is about half of the short-range missile (60 kilometers) fired by North Korea on the 15th, it is similar to a super-large multiple rocket launcher. However, its specific parameters and flight characteristics such as flight distance, speed, and altitude are different from those previously launched by North Korea, and may be brand new weapons.
In this regard, the Joint Staff Headquarters stated that the South Korean and US intelligence agencies are conducting a precise analysis of this, and the South Korean and US military are closely following relevant trends and maintaining a defensive posture.
According to South Korean media reports, the South Korean government held an emergency meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Security Conference (NSC) on the same day and expressed regret that the North Korean side launched its aircraft when it needed to stabilize the situation on the peninsula. However, the committee and the Korean army agreed that whether North Korea launches ballistic missiles needs further analysis. At the meeting, South Korean President Moon Jae-in instructed relevant departments to comprehensively analyze the content of North Korea’s recent talks and missile launches, and formulate a response plan.
According to reports, this is North Korea’s sixth launch this year. On the 15th of this month, the South Korean Joint Staff Headquarters stated that North Korea had launched two ballistic missiles into the eastern waters of the Korean Peninsula.
The KCNA report on the 16th also confirmed that the North Korean military successfully tested a railway mobile missile on the 15th, accurately hitting a target located in 800 kilometers of water in the eastern sea.
