Chuy Montana, an emerging artist of war corridos known for songs such as “Porte de Scarface”, was found dead in violent circumstances in Mexico. The Tijuana artist, whose real name was Jesús Cárdenas, was part of the roster from Street Mob Records, the label headed by Jesús Ortiz Paz (JOP) of Fuerza Regida.
“On behalf of Street Mob Records, we deeply regret the passing of our colleague and brother Chuy Montana,” wrote the stamp On Instagram. “We sympathize with his family during this time of pain. “We kindly ask for understanding and respect from the media at this difficult time.”
The discovery occurred on Wednesday night (February 7) on the highway that connects Rosarito with Tijuana. Authorities revealed that Cárdenas’ body had multiple gunshot wounds and he was found handcuffed, suggesting a premeditated kidnapping prior to his death. Fernando Sánchez, from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Tijuana, confirmed these details, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Billboard Español has contacted the Tijuana police.
The city of Tijuana has taken steps to address the glorification of violence in music by banning narcocorridos at public performances, a decision reaffirmed by Tijuana Mayor Montserrat Caballero in light of recent events.
“It was on the outskirts of the city, and I continue to insist, this type of music (the corridos tumbados) generates a lot of violence,” Caballero said on Thursday (February 8) to the local press in statements reproduced by the Radioformula chain. “Probably the boy has nothing to do with it, but the lyrics incite violence by the criminal group to which they are sung,” he added.
Street Mob Records and its artists have contributed significantly to the corridos tumbados and belikeada movements, subgenres of regional Mexican music that have gained notoriety in recent years. Montana’s career was marked by a significant presence on the Internet, with 816,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. He often played his guitar for people in cars waiting to cross the border at the Tijuana-San Ysidro border crossing, where he was discovered by JOP, as the following video shows:
According to North Point, details surrounding the incident indicate that Montana may have attempted to escape his captors, leading to a chase and his eventual shooting death. Officers responding to the scene found evidence that a violent altercation had occurred. Montana was found with gunshot wounds primarily to the head and arms.
Montana’s music, particularly his 2023 single “Porte de Scarface,” has amassed more than 22 million streams on Spotify. Her collaboration with Fuerza Regida, “Polvos de Chanel,” also highlighted her rising status in the music industry. Her death comes amid concerns for the safety of artists in genres associated with controversial topics.
In October 2023, Fuerza Regida received a death threat through a narco-banter left in Tijuana. After the threat appeared, the San Bernardino group canceled its concert at the Caliente Stadium in Tijuana. Featherweight did the same weeks before, after receiving death threats on a canvas signed with the initials CJNG, in reference to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
