Sudan security forces killed two protesters during ongoing protests in the country against the military coup that overthrew the transitional government of Karthoum. This was reported by medical sources. The organizers demand the restoration of the government ousted by the army and the release of the opponents who ended up in prison after the coup on 25 October. “Two protesters were killed in the city of Omdurman by the coup military council,” he wrote in a tweet The Sudan Doctors Committee (The Sudan Doctors Committee), stressing that the first demonstrator was shot in the head and the second in the stomach. The total number of victims in anti-coup demonstrations, recorded on a daily basis in recent days, would thus rise to 11, compared to at least 170 injured.
The US and the EU: violence will not be accepted
The killings in the city of Omdurman mark the failure of the international community’s appeals for peaceful handling of the protests. On 30 October, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets with national flags and slogans such as “The country is ours and our government is civil”, marching by the hundreds of thousands in the capital Karthoum and other locations in various parts of the country.
The US and the African Union had warned Abdel-Fattah Burhan, the general at the head of the coup, that they would consider the management of the protest as a “test” on the reliability of his leadership and commitment to continue the democratic transition of the country . US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has made it clear that Sudanese security forces must “respect human rights” and that any violence will be considered “unacceptable” by the US administration. Burhan has assured that he will soon install a technocratic government, but the democratic movements fear that the announcement hides the intention to form a team composed only of figures close to or otherwise subject to his political control.
