«Today – says Stoltenberg – is a good day at a crucial moment for our safety. Each nation has the right to choose its own path “. The NATO secretary general underlines that this is a “democratic path”, and for this reason “I warmly welcome the request”. Addressing the two nations, he says: “You are our partners and your membership of NATO will increase our common security. The requests you presented today are a historic step, the allies will now evaluate the next steps on this path “. The security interests of all allies “must be taken into consideration and we are determined to address all issues and come to quick conclusions,” assured Stoltenberg. “All the allies – he concludes – agree on the importance of NATO enlargement: we must stay together and we all agree that this is a historic moment”.
