DAMASCUS – In Damascus, two bombs exploded on the side of the road near a bus carrying soldiers, killing 14 people and injuring others. Syrian state television showed footage of the charred vehicle in the city center. At the moment, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Hafez al-Assad bridge at rush hour, while many were heading to work or school. A third bomb was discovered and defused in the same area.

“This is a cowardly act,” Damascus police commander Hussein Jumaa told state TV, adding that officers immediately cordoned off the area and urged people to notify authorities of any suspicious items. The attack was the deadliest in Damascus in years.

A few hours after the bus exploded in the country’s capital, the Syrian army bombed the city of Ariha, in the Idlib region, a stronghold of the Islamists where many civilians remain trapped. Witnesses reported several injuries and at least 11 deaths, the news agency writes Reuters, among which there are several students.
