The specter of the third consecutive defeat in the championship still hovered at Estádio do Dragão until the 82nd minute, but Mehdi Taremi’s return to goals saved FC Porto from another defeat. In a game in which the “dragons” once again showed appalling defensive weaknesses and little offensive reliability, Famalicão were twice in the lead – Venezuelan Jhonder Cádiz scored twice – but the Porto players managed to achieve a draw (2-2), which was not prevented Sp. Braga from equaling Sérgio Conceição’s team in third place, just five rounds from the end of the I League.

On a hot April day in the city of Porto, the bad moment of the “blue and whites” was reflected in the stands – 30,510 spectators were at Dragão, one of the worst attendances of the season -, and one of the curiosities of the match was understanding how they would react the Porto team after two consecutive defeats in the I League.

In addition to his team’s bad form, Sérgio Conceição did not have Pepe, Fábio Cardoso and João Mário available, but the Porto coach opted to make more changes, leaving Galeno and Alan Varela on the bench.

Thus, even maintaining the 4x2x3x1 that has been the rule since January, Conceição placed Marko Grujic alongside Nico González and Iván Jaime on the left flank. Further back, the Mexican Jorge Sánchez was the right back and, in the center of the defense, there was an unprecedented duo: Zé Pedro and Otávio. This cocktail resulted in a chaotic performance from FC Porto in the first 45 minutes.

Although Famalicão also had important casualties – captain Riccieli and Chiquinho -, Armando Evangelista’s team was the only one in the first half that showed calm and consistency and, in the 9th minute, the weaknesses in FC Porto’s defense began to be taken advantage of by the Minho team. : Puma found a clearing on the left of the Porto defense and placed the ball in the area, where Cádiz had no opposition to score.

Eight minutes later, after a good move on the right by Francisco Conceição, FC Porto still tied without making any shot – Zaydou Youssouf scored in his own goal -, but even before the break, Cádiz took advantage of another mistake by the “dragons” defense to score twice and rightly put Famalicão back in front.

At half-time, Conceição corrected the initial mistake – Galeno, Taremi and Varela replacing Sánchez, Grujic and Jaime – and the improvements in the Porto team were evident. Even though they were unable to stabilize in defense, FC Porto began to build successive opportunities to score, but only managed to equalize in the 82nd minute, after Galeno offered Taremi the opportunity to return to goals: it was the Iranian’s first goal in 2024 for FC Harbor.

The game, however, did not end without another sign of dismay from the “dragons”. In stoppage time, Evanilson was sent off after attacking Mihaj and, therefore, he will be an important casualty on Wednesday, when FC Porto host V. Guimarães in the second leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-final.

With this draw, FC Porto is, with five rounds to go, 15 points behind Sporting – they have one game less -, leaving them mathematically out of the fight for the title if the “lions” score next Tuesday in Famalicão. When it comes to fighting for second place, the Porto team could finish the round 29th, 11 points behind Benfica.
