[Epoch Times, January 16, 2022](The Epoch Times reporter Lin Yan reported that four hostages were kidnapped at a synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, on Saturday (January 15) morning. After 11 p.m., the police announced that all the hostages were released and the suspect was shot dead.

Colleyville Police ChiefMai“Around 9 p.m., the hostage rescue team broke through the synagogue, they rescued three hostages, and the suspect is dead,” Michael Miller told a news conference.

Miller said all hostages are now safe and bomb technicians are clearing the scene.

All of the hostages were adults, he added, but gave no further information such as their ages or identities.

Miller said police received a 911 call at 10:41 a.m. The synagogue was broadcasting online via Facebook and Zoom when the suspect entered and took the four hostages.

Police immediately set up a cordon around the synagogue, evacuated the area and called in a regional SWAT team.Police also contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), andAlcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives AuthorityATF) and other federal partners.

Authorities engaged in “a full day of negotiations” with the suspect and were “in constant communication with him,” Miller said.

At 6 p.m., the suspect released a hostage. The hostage was unharmed and is now in good condition.

The hostage rescue team broke through the synagogue at around 9 p.m. and rescued three other hostages. Miller confirmed that the suspect was dead.

Miller said the entire community, as well as other churches, reached out after the kidnapping. “There are food delivery people, and there are people who take care of our staff,” he said.

Matt DeSarno, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Dallas division, said at a news conference that authorities have identified the hostage-taking suspects, but they cannot release them to the public at this time.

He added that there was no indication it was part of “any ongoing threat” and investigators believed the suspect was focused on “an issue that did not pose a particular threat to the Jewish community.”

DeSano said further investigations will be conducted into the suspect’s contacts and motives, and authorities have reached out to partners in other countries.

He added that the four hostages rescued were unharmed and would be reunited with their families soon.

6 p.m. briefing

At 6 p.m., one hostage was released unharmed. Police believe that three more hostages were taken.

Police have been negotiating with a kidnapper and the SWAT team has stepped in.

Colleyville Superintendent Dara Nelson said a man was released without injuries around 6 p.m. ET.

“FBI crisis negotiators continued to engage with the kidnappers,” she added.

Investigators believe the three hostages are still being held in the synagogue of the Congregation Beth Israel.

The police’s official Twitter account said they were “performing a SWAT operation” in the 6100 block of Pleasant Run Road around 11:30 a.m. This is where the Beth Israel Congregational Church is located.

Police have cordoned off the surrounding area and residents have been evacuated.

The church has a live event today, starting at 10 a.m. and at 2 p.m., the live video was removed from Facebook. But in the video left before it was deleted, a man could be heard speaking, sometimes in what appeared to be an angry tone.

Many people left messages under the Facebook account, praying that the situation would end peacefully.

Nelson said negotiators have reached out to someone inside the synagogue, who they believe is a suspect. Authorities believe there is no current threat to the public.

Police have not yet entered the building, Nelson said.

“Negotiators are in contact with this individual and are working towards a safe settlement,” she said.

The FBI and the state Department of Public Safety were also involved in the police response, Nelson said.

Rep. Beth Van Duyne tweeted: “Please join me in praying for the safety of everyone involved in #Colleyville today, and a speedy resolution. I am monitoring the situation, speaking with officials and will be Update as we learn more.”

At about 2:30 p.m., several emergency vehicles — including ambulances, fire trucks and an armored police vehicle with a long arm in front of it — turned up at the nearby Colleyville Middle School, about a quarter of a mile from the synagogue where the crash occurred.

At least four hostages, including a rabbi, are believed to be inside the church, CNN said, citing a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation at 4 p.m.

The White House said President Biden had been briefed and was following the matter.
