(Vatican News Network)Urges world leaders to take action on the sustainable development of the environment and society. This is the purpose of a petition called “Healthy Earth, Healthy People”. Filipino bishops join this action and publish the petition in the Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines. On the website.
The petition was initiated by the “May You Be Praised Campaign” in May this year and will be presented to world leaders at two different United Nations meetings. The two meetings are: the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity in October, and the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November.
This petition explained to world leaders how to take care of “our common home”. Among the requirements it put forward, “clearly recognize that climate change caused by mankind and biodiversity belong to the same crisis.” In addition, I also realize that ambitious, complementary and transformative actions are needed to respond to the cry of the earth and the poor, as the Pope has repeatedly reiterated. World leaders were also invited to “the Paris Agreement is urgently needed to limit the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius” to reach a significant agreement for the protection of the planet.
In a pastoral message, the Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines urged Catholics and other organizations to sign the petition. Archbishop Romulo Geolina Valles, chairman of the bishopric of the country, said that “our common home is on the brink of disaster” and urgent action is needed. We hope that this year’s creation period will lead us to renew our commitment and take action to ensure that all creations have a safe and healthy home.”
The church began its “creation period” in September. Archbishop Valles also called on the faithful to participate in the activities organized by the Bishops’ Conference “May You Be Praised” national plan. The “Creation Period” will begin on September 1, the day of prayer for caring for the creation, and will end on October 4, the Day of St. Francis of Assisi. This saint is also the protector of ecology. The Philippine Church extended the “period of creation” by one week and ended on Sunday, October 10th, because this Sunday is the day of aboriginal democracy.
