The by-election for the seat of US Congressman George Santos was won by Tom Suozzi of the Democratic Party

The by-election for the seat of Republican US congressman George Santos, expelled from the House in December after being accused of a series of crimes including fraud and theft of public funds, was won by the Democratic Party candidate, Tom Suozzi. The victory of a Democrat further reduces the majority of Republican deputies in the House, which is already very limited.

The electoral district in which the vote was held includes mainly wealthy residential areas on Long Island, just outside New York City: while in much of the state of New York the Democrats have a significant majority, from 2021 in this constituency all elections they had been won by the Republicans. Suozzi, who has a long political career, is a moderate Democrat who has promised to tighten immigration rules and support Israel in its conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The other candidate was Mazi Pilip, of the Republican Party.

With 93 percent of the votes counted, Suozzi obtained 53.9 percent of the votes, while Pilip 46.1 percent.
