In order to participate in the International Eucharist Congress held in Budapest in September, the Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines promoted the “online” National Eucharist Congress. This event will be held at the Holy Cross Church in Manila on September 11.

(Vatican News Network)The Church of the Philippines will hold an “online” National Eucharist at the Holy Cross Church in Manila on September 11. This activity is promoted by the Bishops’ Conference of the country. In terms of implementation, the choice of this date is not accidental, because the 52nd International Eucharist Congress will be held in Budapest, Hungary from September 5th to 12th.

The Executive Secretary of the Standing Committee of the International Eucharist Congress of the Bishops of the Philippines, Father Miguel Garcia, explained that the National Eucharist Congress held in Mania aims to build an “online bridge” with Budapest. Initially, it is expected that at least 500 delegates from Manila will travel to Budapest to attend the Eucharist Congress. Due to the new crown epidemic, this plan was cancelled. Therefore, the church in this country chose to participate in the Eucharist conference through an online connection. At that time, only José Palma, the chairman of the Standing Committee of the International Eucharist Congress of the Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines and the Archbishop of Cebu, José Palma, will travel to Europe to attend the International Eucharist Congress.

In 2016, the 51st International Eucharist Congress was held in Cebu. More than 12,000 delegates attended and more than 1 million people attended the closing mass of the Eucharist Congress. It is worth noting that the International Eucharist Congress held in Budapest was originally to be held in 2020. According to tradition, it should be held in the fourth year after the last conference, but due to the health emergency of the new crown epidemic, the conference was delayed for one year. It is expected that Pope Francis will preside over the closing mass of the International Eucharist at the Heroes’ Square in Budapest on September 12. Subsequently, the Pope will travel to Slovakia for his 34th international pastoral visit.
