The Dalai Lama speaks to Italy: “Harmony and respect for all religions”

by admin

“In this world where there is great scientific and technological progress, we only care about the outside world. There is no tradition in the West that refers to the science of the mind, but now scientists are beginning to recognize the importance of peace of mind and mental happiness. To generate a peaceful mind we need to eliminate the destructive emotions that occupy our mind. No religion speaks of this as profoundly as the Buddha dharma ”. Thus the Dalai Lama this morning, on the occasion of the teaching issued on Four Noble Truths in a video recorded exclusively for theItalian Buddhist Union. It is the first time in history that the Dalai Lama has given a speech for a specific nation, in this case Italy. His words focused on the need to recover one’s own harmony while respecting all religious diversity.

One of my fundamental commitments is to create religious harmony

“We need to meditate and reflect to reach deep certainties in our minds,” he said. And again: “Only by reflecting and realizing the wisdom of listening will we find the meaning and be able to generate an emotional and profound change in our mind. It is necessary to investigate and study, only in this way can certainties be found. All Religions teach a good heart and are useful to men. We must have respect for all of them. One of my fundamental commitments is to create religious harmony. From the philosophical point of view, the Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist religions are different but equally useful to men. We must have respect for all of them. From a philosophical point of view, the religions that come from India are based on the path of logic ”.

The development of inner qualities and a good heart should be academic subjects

“The teaching most present in Buddhism is that which is aimed at the science of the mind. The development of wisdom and warm abiding are important subjects of study. Those who wish to be good people and live a meaningful life can use Buddhist teachings to achieve those results. The foundation of our life is love. The development of inner qualities and a good heart should be academic subjects to be included in the scholastic path of study without talking about Buddhism or religion. It would be a great benefit ”.

The serious problem of global warming

“It is difficult to say what the development and direction of Buddhism will be like in society over the next 50 years. For starters, global warming continues to increase and this is a major problem. I know scientists who have told me that in a decade or so global warming will become unsustainable and many streams will dry up. If this happens, the living things where global warming is occurring will also disappear. If there are no more human beings on the planet it is useless to talk about Dharma ”.

From what the sufferings of the world arise

“The sufferings of the world arise from thinking of oneself as the most important. We must learn to consider all the negative aspects of selfishness and the positive aspects of altruism. In the eight verses of Langri Tanpa’s mental training it is said: with whoever I am, may this always consider me inferior to them. Using this thought wisely means changing oneself and taking a courageous action and not perceiving being humble as discouragement. Altruism becomes more and more powerful until a person is ready to give their life to be of benefit to others. This compassion has in itself a very strong courage ”.
