The DW news network asks the Government of Venezuela to restore its TV broadcast in the country

Cnn in Spanish)– The general director of the German public news channel Deutsche Welle, Peter Limbourg, asked the Venezuelan government on Tuesday to allow the resumption of its TV signal in the country after President Nicolás Maduro announced the interruption and described it as “Nazi radio station.”

“We make a vehement call to the Venezuelan government to reestablish the distribution of the DW TV channel in Spanish as soon as possible. The cancellation of DW distribution is a severe attack on the freedom of people in Venezuela to obtain independent information,” Limbourg said in a statement shared with CNN and published on the German public broadcaster’s website.

“Millions of people have fled Venezuela during the Maduro regime. Freedom of the press practically does not exist. That he reacts with absurd comparisons to a criticism supported by facts is something that fits this profile. Defamation, censorship, internet blocks and the spread of false information about the DW and its informative work is something we are facing in a growing number of countries. “We will continue to do everything in our power to reach out to people living under authoritarian regimes,” he added.

The main cable operators in Venezuela canceled this Monday the distribution of the signal of the German channel DW in Spanish, after the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, stated during the transmission of his program “Con Maduro+”, that the station was participating in “a campaign to tarnish Venezuela, and in the end, try to tarnish me. They will not return, they will not return.”

“(The DW) has a campaign saying that all the crimes that are committed in the world today are committed by Venezuelans,” said Maduro.”

The forced cancellation occurred after DW broadcast a video called “How it affects you,” which addresses corruption in different Latin American countries – including Venezuela – as well as possible links between politicians and organized crime. The program has Amnesty International and Insight Crime as primary sources. In a social media text about a segment of the video, it is clearly stated that it is not known to what extent Maduro himself is informed or involved.

The National Union of Press Workers of Venezuela told CNN that this would be at least the eighth media outlet to go off the air. In February 2017, the Venezuelan government ordered the cancellation of CNN en Español and has subsequently taken similar measures against El Tiempo, RCN, NTN24, Caracol Noticias, Todo Noticias and TV Azteca, among others.
