The Mud Machine never sleeps. As Giuseppe Salvaggiulo said yesterday in our newspaper, the investigation by the Florence Public Prosecutor’s Office on the Open Foundation reveals a mechanism for building consensus and destroying dissent by now tested in the Second Republic. Silvio Berlusconi began with his Delta Structure and its huge conflict of interest. Then came his emulators. Get fat, and in disguise, at the cafeteria for anthropophages of the Web. So, not only the great Salvinian Beast. But also the little Renzian Specter, a crossroads of all its own and improper interests. Bank transfers from the Saudis and loans from Benettons. The plans to wreak havoc on the grillini and those to control the media. The “character assassination” and the dossierage. Fake news and foreign servers. There is everything and more in those judicial acts. Above all, there is a device of power that Renzi denies, hiding behind the hoax of the so-called “state hacking”, and which instead should make him reflect on the misery to which his famous storytelling is reducing. The investigation will tell if there are crimes. By eye, they are not seen. But you can see the political baseness. You see the moral littleness. And that’s enough.
PS Short personal note. Renzi himself goes back to the story of an alleged sentence of mine in a case lost against Marco Carrai, and of my alleged compensation for damages paid to his benefit. He had already talked about it inappropriately on Friday, at “Otto e Mezzo” on La7. Now he relaunches on his social networks, exhibiting a document in which my “apologies to Carrai” and a check of mine made out to him, complete with my signature, zoomed in artfully next to the check itself, would appear. It is depressing, for those who do my job seriously, but I am forced to specify the following:
1) There is no “condemnation” or “lost cause” on my part against Carrai. The same filed a lawsuit for defamation against me, for an article of mine in “Repubblica” of 2016. In May 2019 the case was withdrawn by the plaintiff, after conciliation which is attested by the letter presented by Renzi, in which I limit myself to specify that you have not offended anyone.
2) There is no “compensation for damages” paid by me to Carrai. I did not know the existence of the check heralded by Renzi. It doesn’t bear my signature, as anyone can see. It bears an amount of only 3,000 euros (and this is enough to understand that it cannot be a matter of compensation for damages). In fact it is not. As my Editor can make clear, it is instead a simple concurrence for legal fees, which the parties usually share when a case is withdrawn. And this is all. In spite of what the senator from Scandicci continues to propagate, I have not lied. But, again, I note with bitterness how his continuous campaigns of delegitimization and manipulation of facts are really bringing politics to the zero degree of dignity and decency.
