Introduction to Thanksgiving
The fourth Thursday in November is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is an ancient holiday created by the American people, and it is also a holiday for American families to gather. Therefore, Americans always feel cordial when it comes to Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the most authentic and American holiday among the national holidays in the United States. It is most closely related to early American history.
In 1620, some worshippers took the “Mayflower” ship to America to seek religious freedom. After two months of turbulence in the sea, they finally landed in Plymouth in what is now Martha’s state in a very cold November.
In the first winter, more than half of the immigrants died of starvation and infectious diseases. The surviving people began to sow seeds in the spring of 1621 with the help of local indigenous Indians. Throughout the summer, they have been eagerly looking forward to the harvest. They know that their survival and the existence of the colony will depend on the upcoming harvest. Finally, the crops received an unexpected bumper harvest.
In order to thank God for the harvest and the help of the local indigenous people, they held a three-day carnival. Since then, this custom of celebration has continued and has gradually become popular everywhere.
How Thanksgiving became a national holiday
In 1789, President Washington declared Thursday, November 26th, as a national Thanksgiving holiday for the first time, and subsequent presidents also announced similar presidential decree. However, it was not until the nineteenth century that Thanksgiving Day officially became a fixed annual national holiday.
At that time, the author of the nursery rhyme “Mary has a little sheep” and the female writer Sarah Josepha Haley were inspired by the Puritan diary and determined to reproduce the tradition of the first gratitude feast in American history. Therefore, from 1827 to 1857, she worked tirelessly to set Thanksgiving as a national holiday.
In 1863, U.S. President Lincoln declared the fourth Thursday of November every year as Thanksgiving.
In 1939, President Roosevelt decided to advance Thanksgiving by one week to allow retailers during the Great Depression era to have more time to promote sales, but this move was opposed.
In 1941, Congress passed a bill signed by President Roosevelt to officially designate Thanksgiving Day as the fourth Thursday of November.
Thanksgiving holiday celebrations have been scheduled on this day, and continue to this day. By then, families will be reunited to celebrate the whole country, and the grand and enthusiastic situation will be no less than that of the Chinese New Year.
The pattern of Thanksgiving holiday wishes has not changed for many years. The splendid family banquet began to prepare a few months ago. People can eat apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes on the table, as well as raisin pudding, minced meat pies, various other foods, as well as cranberry moss juice and fresh juice. Among them, the most wonderful and attractive dishes are Roasted turkey and pumpkin pie, these dishes have always been the most traditional and beloved food on Thanksgiving.
Promotion of Chinese Thanksgiving
Since ancient times, the Chinese nation has been willing to help others and repaying favors. “When you receive the grace of dripping water, you should repay you with the spring.” It was once a famous saying. In a civilized society, it is necessary to know gratitude and have a heart of gratitude; this is also an important requirement for building a harmonious society, which can promote harmony and coordination among members, groups, classes, and groups of society, and promote People respect each other, trust and help each other.
Therefore, some people have previously suggested that they can also set up their own Thanksgiving in China, so that students can learn to empathize, cherish friends, and understand their parents; let people be sincere and caring for others.
