Original title: The Russian army bombed the western city of Lviv, only 70 kilometers from the Polish border

On Friday (March 18) local time, the mayor’s office in the southern Ukrainian city of Lviv said several Russian missiles hit a location close to Lviv airport early in the morning. Subsequently, the mayor’s office confirmed that the bombing was an aircraft maintenance factory near Lviv. Since the work of the factory had stopped before the attack, there was no information on casualties, and rescuers had rushed to the scene.

Mayor Andriy Sadovyi posted on social media that he was confirming the situation on the ground and asked people not to share photos of the attack site.

Foreign media reporters interviewing locally in Lviv said they heard multiple explosions around 6:30 a.m. on Friday and saw smoke rising from the direction of Danylo Halytskyi International Airport in western Lviv. A Russian submarine fired six cruise missiles in the direction of Lviv in the Black Sea, two of which were intercepted, the Western Ukraine Air Force Command said later.

The city in western Ukraine had not been bombed by Russian forces before, making it a stronghold for internally displaced people in Ukraine and a transport hub for those fleeing from Ukraine to neighboring countries. According to the city’s mayor, more than 200,000 people have poured into the city of 700,000 since the war began. Lviv is not only a makeshift base for many media organizations and embassies, but also an important location on the arms supply route of the Ukrainian army.

Lviv is just 70 kilometers from the border with Poland, a NATO member. Foreign media pointed out that any attack on the city has the potential to cause “international repercussions.”
