The Swiss want the Green Pass: 62% vote “yes” in the referendum

by admin

The green pass in Switzerland, known as the “Covid certificate”, was approved today by 62% of citizens. Only two cantons opposed it. The polls on the eve had predicted the outcome of the scrutiny quite precisely and from the counting of the first municipalities and cantons it was understood that the result would never be in the balance.

The “Federal law on Federal Council ordinances aimed at dealing with the Covid-19 epidemic” was approved by 2,222,373 people, while 1,361,284 were against. The difference was therefore over 861,000 cards. The participation turned out to be very high, equal to 64.9%.

Voters had already expressed their opinion in June 2021 on the Covid-19 law, in its version dating back to September 2020: the text had then been approved with a slightly smaller share, 60.2% of votes. A second referendum was launched against the changes introduced in March of this year, by associations not linked to any party.

Compared to the first vote, the social climate appeared considerably more tense. As in other European countries, there was no lack of demonstrations against the restrictions dictated by the fight against the coronavirus and against what is perceived as an interference by the state in the fundamental rights of citizens. To cope with any unrest today, guards have also been erected around the Federal Palace.
