[Epoch Times July 23, 2021]US Attorney General Merrick. Garland (Merrick Garland) announced on Thursday (July 22) that it will set up task forces in five major cities in the United States, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Washington, DC to combat illegal gun trafficking.

Authorities said the plan includes strengthening law enforcement in cities and states with loose gun control policies, because these areas are easy to obtain guns and are therefore often trafficked to other cities with stricter gun control policies.

A Justice Department official said that the difference from previous measures is that the plan did not send agents or prosecutors to cities with high crime rates. The official pointed out that the new plan is to strengthen the prosecution of gun crimes in a targeted manner. At the same time, it will also establish “cross-jurisdictional coordination” with various areas that traffic in illegal guns and gun crimes.

The official explained that this plan will allow law enforcement agencies and prosecutors in gun violence areas and gun source areas to coordinate and make comprehensive and consistent decisions.

According to statistics from the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit organization in the United States, as of July 22, there have been 378 mass shootings across the United States this year, an increase of more than 20% compared to the same period last year.

In addition, according to data from the San Francisco Police Department, there have been 119 (fatal and non-fatal) shootings involving gun violence in San Francisco in the first half of the year. This is not only a 6-year high, but also an increase of more than double from 58 in the same period last year. . ◇
