The UN has called the Italian-Swedish diplomat into action Staffan De Mistura for a position that for two years he had not been able to fill due to the reciprocal vetoes of the countries affected by the crisis. De Mistura will be the secretary general’s special envoy for the conflict in Western Sahara, which sees Morocco as opposed to the Polisario Front supported by Algeria. It was since May 2019 that the United Nations could not replace the last envoy, who had been the former president of the German Republic Horst Koehler.
