The Venezuelan government and the opposition began a dialogue in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, on the 13th, with a view to resolving the domestic political and economic crisis.
The Venezuelan government delegation was led by Jorge Rodríguez, chairman of the parliament, and the opposition was led by former MP Gerardo Bled. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on the 13th, agreeing to promote a “comprehensive dialogue and consultation process”, mentioning the need to lift sanctions, stabilize the economy, and avoid any form of political violence.
This round of dialogue was mediated by the Norwegian government. Norwegian diplomat Dag Halvo Nilande said: “The current crisis in Venezuela can only be resolved through these politicians, and the outcome of the consultations will depend entirely on the commitment and political will of all parties.”
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on the 12th that the Venezuelan government will “independently” participate in this round of dialogue and “will not succumb to the extortion and threats of the US government.” The Venezuelan government has repeatedly condemned the U.S. and EU sanctions for serious damage to Venezuela’s domestic economy.
U.S. President Joseph Biden did not relax sanctions on Venezuela after he took office, and continued to support Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido.
Maduro won re-election in the presidential election held in May 2018. The United States does not recognize the results of this election and supports Guaido, the self-proclaimed “Interim President” of the parliamentary chairman. With the support of the United States, Guaido kept moving, but all attempts to seize power were unsuccessful.
