Three dangerous changes in Delta variants! One look at new symptoms and vaccine protection | India variant virus | New crown virus | Infectivity

by admin

The Indian variant virus Delta is the most contagious among the variants of new coronaviruses currently found. According to Australian authorities, the family contagiousness of the Delta variant is nearly 100%. The Delta variant has disturbing mutations in three aspects: infectiousness, pathogenicity, and immune escape.

Delta variant: currently the most infectious virus

The first variant of the new coronavirus Delta (also known as B.1.617.2) discovered in India has spread in more than 90 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and even quickly became a major epidemic virus strain in the United Kingdom. The World Health Organization directly expressed its concerns about the Delta variant, saying that it is the most contagious virus among the variants found so far.

Former U.S. Food and Drug Administration Director Dr. Scott Gottlieb also told CBS that the Delta variant is likely to become the main strain of the virus in the United States, and may “detonate new ones in the fall. Epidemic”.

Australia’s largest city, Sydney, is taking measures to lock down the city for the first time due to the Delta virus invasion. Local government officials report that the family transmission rate of the Delta variant is close to 100%, while the family transmission power of the early strain is only 25%. Some confirmed cases just passed by in the store and were infected with the virus.

According to data released by Nextstrain, a platform that continuously monitors variant viruses around the world, the proportion of Delta variants in global strains was still less than 1% on March 15 and had rapidly increased to 27% as of June 21.

It has been previously found that compared with the British variant Alpha, the infectivity of the Delta variant is increased by about 60%, which is 11 to 30 times more infectious than the original virus.

At the Science Media Center (SMC) briefing, Wendy Barclay, professor of virology and head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London, explained that the Delta variant has two important mutations. “One is at the furin cleavage site, which we think is very important for the adaptability of the virus in the respiratory tract.

The adaptability of the original virus that began in Wuhan in the respiratory tract is not ideal, so the spread is not so good. The British variant virus has taken a step towards this point, and the Delta variant has taken a bigger step on this basis.

Barclays pointed out that current data indicate that the virus is “more suitable for human respiratory cells.” This means that the number of viruses in the infected person’s body will increase, and they may discharge more viruses into the air, thereby infecting the next person. If the Delta variant is better at infecting human respiratory cells, people may be infected with only a lower amount of virus.

Delta variants may increase pathogenicity and have immune escape ability

Not only does the infectivity increase, the Delta variant also has the possibility of increasing pathogenicity and immune escape ability, testing the protective power of the vaccine.

According to preliminary findings published in June by The Lancet, the risk of hospitalization for patients infected with the Delta variant is twice that of the British variant. Experts believe that the death rate of the Delta variant has not risen at present, which is related to vaccination, but the increasing number of hospitalized patients will increase the pressure on the exhausted medical system and make it more difficult for patients to receive complete care.

Another important mutation of the Delta variant in the spike protein is the site with immune evasion ability, L452R. According to the latest information from the CDC in the United States, the Delta variant may be able to partially achieve immune evasion, escape the antibodies produced by the body after infection with the new coronavirus or vaccination, which reduces the neutralizing ability of antibodies and the effectiveness of vaccines. This variant may also reduce the therapeutic effect of certain monoclonal antibodies.

The United Kingdom is currently one of the countries with the highest vaccination coverage, and people still die after receiving two full doses of the vaccine. A report from the Department of Public Health of the United Kingdom on June 25 pointed out: 109 people in the UK died of the Delta variant, 18 people received 1 dose and 50 people received 2 doses.

Official British statistics have found that the new crown vaccine seems to have poor protection against Delta virus:

Two weeks after the second vaccination, the Pfizer vaccine is 88% effective against the Delta virus, and the AstraZeneca vaccine is 60%.

Within three weeks after the first vaccination, the effectiveness of these two vaccines against Delta virus was only 33%.

Fortunately, in terms of critical illness protection, 96% of Pfizer vaccine and 92% of AstraZeneca vaccine are still effective for hospitalized patients.

Delta variant virus symptoms: headache, fever, cough, sore throat

The symptoms after infection with the Delta variant have also changed. The British authorities allow people to use APP to report symptoms on the Internet to conduct research. The symptoms of Delta virus uploaded by the confirmed person are more like having a bad cold. The main manifestations are headache, followed by sore throat, runny nose and fever. More “traditional” symptoms of new coronary pneumonia, such as coughing and loss of smell, are rare.

Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center integrated the symptoms of the Delta variant virus in the United Kingdom and Singapore, indicating that fever and cough are still the largest clinical signs: fever (72%), cough (46%), sore throat (34%), nasal congestion/flow Nasal fluid (16%), dyspnea (19%), and asymptomatic (12%).

Delta has a new mutation: Delta Plus

What is worrying is that Delta has a new mutation-Delta Plus, and it has appeared in many countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States and India.

According to the COVID-19 genome sequencing agency of the Indian government, the Delta Plus variant has several characteristics: increased transmission, stronger binding to lung cell receptors, and potential reduction in antibody response, which also means that Delta Plus may make the vaccine effective decline.

Francois Balloux, director of the Institute of Genetics at University College London (UCL), pointed out to the Science Media Center that Delta Plus had a K417N mutation in the spike protein. This is not a new mutation. The South African variant virus Beta also has this mutation, but “this mutation may help evade immunity, although its impact on transmission is unclear.”

At present, Delta Plus is under continuous monitoring in terms of immune escape, pathogenicity and infectivity.
