Tragedy in the Philippines: at least one dead and 53 injured when the balcony of a church collapses during mass

At least one person has tragically died and 53 others were injured when a balcony collapsed in a church in the Philippines during Ash Wednesday mass celebrations. The collapsed floor of the church of Saint Peter the Apostle was filled with worshipers when part of the wooden floor gave way, causing chaos and injury.

The head of Civil Defense of San José del Monte, Gina Ayson, confirmed that an 80-year-old woman lost her life due to multiple chest wounds. The injured, mostly elderly, suffered bruises and other minor cuts. Reports suggest that the structure of the balcony was infested with termites, making it weaker than it appeared from the outside.

The local mayor has ordered the church to be closed while investigators inspect the structural safety of the building, which was constructed in 1994. Photos posted by Mayor Arthur Robes on his Facebook page showed part of the wooden balcony hanging less than a meter from the ground floor, with the area littered with church pews, broken plastic chairs, and debris.

Meanwhile, in southern Philippines, at least 71 people have died after a landslide buried dozens of houses and two buses, according to authorities. The tragedy in Maco, Davao de Oro, occurred after heavy rains caused an avalanche of earth and mud, resulting in widespread devastation. Rescue operations are ongoing as emergency services continue to treat the injured and search for missing people.

Since the end of January, the southern Philippines has been affected by strong storms, causing several incidents of landslides and flooding. At least 18 people have died and another 11 have been injured due to the severe weather.
