Transnistria asks Russia for help against “pressure” from Moldova. Chisinau: “Only propaganda”

All it took was one vote at the Congress of Transnistria to make the tension between again squirt Russia e Moldavia. The self-proclaimed pro-Russian republic nestled between the country with capital Chisinau e Ukraine has in fact asked for “help” from the Federation against “pressures” of the neighbor, who formally holds those territories, even if not de facto. A communication that led to the hypothesis of a possibility armed intervention of Moscow also in that strip of land, with the opening of a Moldovan front in the war in Ukraine.

Tiraspol he then clarified that the request concerns exclusively a “diplomatic support“: “First of all – underlined the Foreign Minister of the pro-Russian separatist entity, Vitaly Ignatiev – we are talking about a request for diplomatic support. Let’s say that Russia is a responsible guarantor for the solution of the conflict in Transnistria.” And we didn’t have to wait long to get Moscow’s confirmation of full support for Tiraspol: “Protecting the interests of the residents of Transnistria, our compatriots, is one of the priorities – the Foreign Ministry said – All requests are always taken into careful consideration by the competent Russian departments.”

The resolution approved by the Congress of Transnistria calls for “addressing the Council of the Russian Federation and the State Duma with the request to implement measures to protect Transnistria in the face of increasing pressure from Moldova”. In the text, the separatists state that “more than 220 thousand Russian citizens reside in the area, which the Russian peacekeeping in the river region Dnestr was successful and that Russia acted as a mediator in the talks between Chisinau and Tiraspol.”

The Moldovan government defined the decision of the Tiraspol Congress as “an event purely propaganda” and is convinced that his decisions do not constitute a threat of escalation, the executive representative said Daniel Voda. “This event was planned by those on the left side of the Dniester and from Kremlin – he said – We do not see a danger of destabilization. We observe very closely and repeat that this region also wants peace and security.”

The new Polish prime minister is more alarmed, Donald Tuskaccording to which tensions in Transnistria are “dangerous” for the region: “The threat of Russian intervention, or at least provocation, is permanent. This doesn’t surprise me. But it shows how dangerous the situation is, and not just for Ukraine.”
