A Turkish High Court ordered the release of noted journalist and writer Ahmet Altan sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison in 2019 for his involvement in the failed 2016 coup.
The decision comes the day after the European Court of Human Rights strongly condemned Turkey for the detention of this 71-year-old intellectual who is respected at home and abroad. This was reported by the state news agency Anadolu.
After the court ruling, the veteran reporter, also well known as a writer, was released tonight, according to his lawyer, Figen Calikusu. Ahmet Altan, who has always declared himself innocent, was one of the symbolic cases of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s repression against journalists and intellectuals after the attempted coup. For some time his release had been requested by many parts in Europe.
