Six killed and mutilated lions were found yesterday in one of Uganda’s most famous national parks. An official said this today, stating that it was probably wild animal traffickers who caused the death of the big cats by poisoning them.

The six carcasses of the lions were found in Queen Elizabeth National Park in the west of the country, with most of the body parts missing and surrounded by dead vultures, suggesting that a venom was used to kill them.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (Uwa) said it was “saddened” by the death of these particular lions, known for their unusual ability to climb the trees of the famous reserve. An investigation has been launched into the affair, with a team on the spot working with the local police the Uwa has made public.

“Since some parts of the lions’ bodies are missing, we cannot rule out illegal wildlife trafficking,” the Authority’s communications officer, Bashir Hangi, said in a statement.
The park shares a border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and its famous Virunga National Park, a habitat for rare mountain gorillas, where armed groups are believed to operate.
