UK, a parliamentary report accuses the government: “Lockdown decreed late, thousands of deaths could have been avoided”

“Great Britain performed much worse than other countries in the first days of the pandemic, the lockdown started late.” This is what emerges from a 150-page report approved in the British Parliament by 22 lawmakers from the three largest parties, the ruling Conservatives, the opposition Labor Party and the Scottish National Party. The investigation throws thoughtful accusations against the work of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who with more adequate measures could have prevented thousands of deaths.

In particular, the commission challenges the government to lead Tory, of having waited too long before imposing the lockdown, in March 2020, losing the possibility of containing the contagion and avoiding the death of thousands of people. According to the report, Prime Minister Johnson’s decision not to follow up on the advice of scientific advisors was at the root of the fatal mistake.

“The government hoped to be able to avoid a lockdown to avoid the heavy repercussions that this would have on the national economy, on health services and on society,” it reads. “In the absence of other strategies – continues the report – such as rigorous isolation of positives, an efficient tracking system, and adequate border control, a generalized lockdown was inevitable, and should have started earlier”.

The document was drafted with the aim of improving the UK response to the pandemic, and better preparing for any future threats. Testimonies from around 50 people were heard in the investigation, including former Health Secretary Matt Hancock and former government member Dominic Cummings.
