Ukraine, Russia withdraws some troops from Crimea. Born: no de-escalation

Russia announced the end of military exercises in Moscow-annexed Crimea, where the deployment of troops had fueled fears of an invasion of Ukraine. The soldiers, the Ministry of Defense announced in a statement, are returning to their garrisons: the news follows a first withdrawal of Russian troops from the borders of Ukraine yesterday February 15. “The units of the southern military district, which completed the tactical exercises in the bases of the Crimean peninsula and are returning by train to their base, ”said the Russian Defense Ministry, quoted by Russian agencies. Russia did not specify the extent or timing of this withdrawal. Russia continues for the moment to carry out the maneuvers announced in Belarus which should end on February 20.

The Ministry of Defense also released a video showing tanks and military vehicles retreating from Crimea as evidence of the end of the exercises. The stock exchanges are catching up on this truce and Tokyo closes at + 2.2%.

Biden said in the past few hours that despite the announced withdrawal from Moscow, there are still 150,000 Russian soldiers amassed on the border with Ukraine.

Same objection as NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg. Who today says: «There is no de-escalation on the ground. Russia retains the ability to invade without warning ». The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, expressed caution this morning at the announcement of the withdrawal of Russian forces from Crimea, stressing that it must first “verify”. Commenting on the news on radio France Inter, the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy said that the withdrawal, “if it were true, without a doubt” would be a sign of relaxation. However, he added: “We must always check” ..

So too was the president of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen at the Strasbourg plenary. “NATO has not yet seen clear signs of retreat. I believe that diplomacy has not said the last word but now we have to see facts as well as words ”. Regarding gas, von der Leyen specified: “We have examined all the possible perturbations if Russia chooses to use energy as a pressure lever and I can say that for this winter we are safe. With the member states we have developed emergency measures that we can put in place if a total crisis comes: over 200 LNG ships are arriving in Europe, ”she said. “But we must also invest to free ourselves from the dependence on Russia for gas.”
