UN Rapporteur pointed out that Chavismo prevented him from visiting detention centers

The special rapporteur of the United Nations (UN) on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, has expressed concerns about the access to food in Venezuela, particularly for vulnerable groups such as prisoners, children, and women. He stated that the government prevented him from visiting detention centers and constantly changed his agenda during his two-week visit to the country. Fakhri highlighted the serious food security issues in detention centers, where inmates are not provided with food, water, or healthcare. He urged for expedited trials and transfers to prisons, where the situation is slightly better. Fakhri also raised concerns about the inhumane and degrading conditions in these centers, which have become assigned places of detention due to judicial delays. The government’s refusal to allow Fakhri to visit these centers and logistical problems during his visit have led to frustrations. The special rapporteur will present his conclusions before the UN Human Rights Council in March.
