[Antara News Agency, Jakarta]The UN Special Envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, urged General Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of the Burmese military government, to step down according to the wishes of the people. Grant civilian government powers.
In his speech at the interactive dialogue of the third session of the General Assembly, Christine said that under the leadership of the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Myanmar Army, I do not see any bright or stable future for Myanmar. If Min Aung Lai really cares about the future of the country, then he should step down and transfer power to the civilian government according to the wishes of the people. She emphasized that since the military coup took place on February 1, the vulnerable groups in Myanmar have faced increasing pressure. Subsequently, the situation in the country has continued to deteriorate and conflicts across the country have become increasingly tense.
Christine said that the suffering of disadvantaged groups, especially Rohingya and religious minorities, is increasing. In addition, as the country responds to the threat of the new crown epidemic, its support for human rights, humanitarianism and socio-economics is also declining. The direction of the current situation is that Myanmar will face a long-term conflict, followed by an economic collapse, more people will be forced to flee, and the human rights situation will deteriorate. All of this will have terrible consequences for the people of Myanmar, neighboring countries and the entire region.
Myanmar is rapidly moving into the abyss. Compared with the huge challenges that will be faced in the next few years, any sacrifices required to change direction will be a negligible price. Christine said that the military did not respond to calls to prevent increased violence or take downgrade measures, including the release of Myanmar President Win Myint and Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and other civilian government members.
Regarding the role of the international community, Christine called for the importance of reaching a political settlement and compromise goal to form the basis of ongoing dialogue activities. She said that if there is no sign that the Myanmar military government is taking a peaceful solution seriously, she urges all UN member states and regional organizations present to exercise caution and restraint, and refrain from taking any steps that can make attempts without clear goals legitimize.
